26 REALTY dienen goed geld, maar hebben geen tijd om drie keer per week ruim een uur te rijden om naar een poloclub te gaan en ik zelf ook niet. Het moest dus in de buurt zijn. Maar er is haast geen grond in West-Nederland waar je een poloveld kunt aanleggen. Een poloveld is 270 bij 130 meter. De meeste kavels zijn dertig meter breed met een sloot ertussen en hebben de verkeerde ondergrond. Klei is te hard, veen te zacht. Zavelgrond is goed. Toen kwam deze boerderij te koop, met 45 hectare grond. Een ideale locatie, aan de Vecht, op een halfuurtje rijden van Amsterdam én Utrecht. Ik belde Laurens en zei dat hij moest komen kijken. Hij kwam en zei: ‘Als je hier een poloclub van wil maken, dan moet je eerst de Zuiderzeewerken hebben gedaan.’” Terwijl Van Zadelhof f het verhaal over de oude boerderij vertelt, geeft Brouns een bevestigend knikje om dan het woord over te nemen. “Ik kwam het terrein opgereden, zag autobanden op het erf, koeienstront, hooimijt. Ik kon niet door die grote agrarische bedoening heen kijken. Het duurde even voordat Cor me kon uitleggen wat de mogelijkheden waren. Het heeft in totaal ook goed twee jaar geduurd voordat alles gereed was. Maar nu hebben we een van de mooiste poloclubs van West-Europa. Polospelers uit Frankrijk, Duitsland en België komen om hier te trainen en te spelen.” I m a g o Polo is in Nederland nog altijd een kleine sport in absolute zin. Er zijn momenteel vier poloclubs en zo’n honderd spelers, schetst Brouns de huidige status. “Zo’n zestig spelers zijn heel actief, dat betekent dat we ongeveer vijftien teams van vier spelers hebben in Nederland. Onze vereniging telt 25 actieve leden.” I called Laurens and asked him to have a look. When he got here, he said: “If you want to turn this into a polo club, you first have to sort out the Zuiderzee Works.”’ Brouns nods approvingly as Van Zadelhof f tells the story of the old farm, then he takes over. ‘When I first arrived at the property, all I saw was tire tracks, cow patties and mites. I couldn' t see past all the farm stuf f. It took Cor a while to explain the possibilities to me. The conversion itself took a good two years to complete, but we now have one of the finest polo clubs in Western Europe. Players from France, Germany and Belgium come here to train and play.’ I m a g e Polo is still a relatively small sport in relative terms. The Netherlands has four polo clubs and about a hundred players, explains Brouns. ‘Only about sixty of them are active, meaning we have fifteen teams of four players in the Netherlands. Our club has 25 active members.’ Polo is still regarded as a high society sport. Van Zadelhoff and Brouns admit that it can be expensive, mainly due to the horses. Each player must have at least four horses per match, with each match consisting of four seven-minute periods called ‘chukkas’. The players switch horses before each chukka. ‘The commitment makes it hard to get people excited about the sport,’ says Brouns. ‘Horses aren’t like football boots, you can't just throw them away when you get tired of playing. In order to master the sport, you have to train at least three times a week.’
