Vooruit, laatst had ik er even last van, dat bleek te komen omdat ik over het vermogen dat ik op de bank had gezet boeterente moest betalen. Daar kon ik niet tegen. Dus heb ik dat geld aan het VU/AMC gedoneerd. Dat is ook een tip: geef je geld uit, dan heb je geen stress en leef je langer.” M u s e u m p l e i n Van Zadelhof f wil polo laagdrempeliger maken en investeert daar ook in. Zo bedacht hij samen met ProSport het Museumplein Polo Event. De toeristische trekpleister wordt drie dagen omgetoverd tot een polo-arena, van tachtig bij veertig meter, waar demonstratiewedstrijden worden gespeeld. In 2016 was de eerste editie. In 2020 ging het event niet door vanwege de coronamaatregelen, in 2021 werd het Museumplein verbouwd en kon het polo-event dus ook niet plaatsvinden. De aanvraag voor 2022 ligt inmiddels alweer bij de gemeente. Van Zadelhof f: “We willen het grote publiek kennis laten maken met de sport. We hebben een publieke tribune voor circa 2.500 mensen. De eerste edities zat deze steeds vol, zonder al te veel publiciteit vooraf. Het is toch uniek, zo’n sportevenement midden in de stad? Het is mooi dat je zegt dat polo net zo kan zijn als Formule 1. Ook dat is een dure sport om te doen, maar ondertussen geniet de hele wereld ervan. Zo kun je polo ook benaderen. Geweldig toch?” EXCLUSIVE SPORTS ‘Or the stress of it all could have driven me to an early grave,’ he adds. ‘I never feel stressed. Okay, I felt a bit stressed a while ago when I found out I had to pay penalty interest on my bank assets. There was no way I was going to do that, so I donated the money to Amsterdam UMC instead. He partnered with ProSport to set up the Museumplein Polo Event. For three days, the tourist hotspot is transformed into an 80-by-40-metre polo arena for exhibition matches. The first edition was held in 2016. In 2020 the event was cancelled due to Covid restrictions and in 2021 it fell through due to renovation work on the Museumplein. The 2022 permit is awaiting the approval of the municipality. ‘We want to introduce the sport to the general public,’ says Van Zadelhof f. ‘We have seating that can accommodate some 2500 people. The first editions were sold out without much publicity beforehand. A sporting even like this in the middle of the city is pretty unique. I like the comparison between polo and Formula 1. That’s also an expensive sport, but it has fans all over the world. There’s no reason the same can' t be true of polo one day!’
