Je kunt wel plannen hebben voor iets nieuws, maar als de locatie de potentie niet heeft, wordt het een lastig verhaal. Wat die potentie is? Op driehonderd meter van het circuit ligt het strand, aan de andere kant zijn we omringd door een schitterend natuurgebied. Het circuit ligt op fietsafstand van een oude stad als Haarlem, en met de trein ben je binnen twintig minuten op Amsterdam Centraal. Maar we moeten ons dusdanig organiseren dat het over een aantal jaar niet meer uitmaakt of Max nog in de Formule 1 rijdt. Ik gebruik graag de vergelijking met de Zwarte Cross. Dat was vroeger een motorcrossevenement, maar de jongeren van nu kennen deze historie niet eens. Voor hen is het een fantastisch breed festival. Dat is ook onze doelstelling: we mogen niet afhankelijk zijn van Nederlands grootste sportheld. Natuurlijk heb ik hem er graag nog minimaal tien jaar bij, maar we moeten als circuit én grand prix op eigen benen kunnen staan.” “Door de coronamaatregelen hebben we nog niet het evenement kunnen organiseren dat we voor ogen hadden. We had to disappoint thirty thousand people after our capacity was reduced from a hundred thousand to seventy thousand. Next year, on 4 September, we hope to open at maximum capacity. We’ve also had to scrap most of The Ultimate Race Festival, the entertainment side of things. For us, it was important to separate fact from public opinion. You can’t win everyone over, which is something we came to terms with. We did, however, win eight court cases and three injunctions – all on facts. We didn’t focus on public opinion after the Grand Prix either, despite the feedback being overwhelmingly positive. I could have been on a talk show every night of the week. Of course I’m proud, but I'd rather leave the rave reviews to other people. It’s important to stay humble.’ ‘Despite hosting a successful Grand Prix, we still haven’t developed the perfect blueprint. We want to learn from what other tracks are doing.
